Dan Exposed

Skills:

I’ve been a carnie, an ecologist, a woodworker, a web developer, and now I’m trying really hard to grow a mustache.

Tools of the trade:
Chrome Developer Tools, Sublime Text, Sass, desk toys, and a refresh button.

What is your development style?
Ideally: clean, semantic scaffolding combined with efficient and modular styling.  Realistically: trial and error.

Dream project:
A coherent, simply-navigated app that aggregates the abstracts of the plethora of esoteric scientific papers published daily into concise, layperson-oriented “take home messages” to help bridge the fiery morass that is the scientific community’s attempt at public outreach.

How is building a website like woodworking?
Much of my life has been spent oscillating around an attempt to reconcile the right and left brains and the only professions I have found that approach that sweet spot are woodworking and computer programming: sexy combinations of aesthetics and pragmatism.

How is building a website not like woodworking?
It’s much safer to have a beer and code.  Also god forbid trying to measure dovetails in ems.

Future technology prediction:
Humanity will finally be distilled down to its capitalistic essence and every individual will become a number, controlled by android police officers and mandatory mood stabilizers.  And wearables.

I-SITE upcycles with WE CAN

Here at I-SITE, we are constantly looking for ways to be green in our office with recycling and energy conservation. So when a project came along that involves social responsibility and beer how could we say no!

Designers of sustainable products MIO and The Trestle Inn, owned by our CEO Ian Cross, recently teamed up to create WE CAN, an on-going campaign that uses smart design to inspire upcycled solutions to aluminum can waste and create healthier and more vibrant communities.

The maiden project, A Pop-Up Beer Can Garden, is a playful tongue-in-cheek response to the many “pop up” beer gardens which have recently proliferated around Philadelphia. Taking place during DesignPhiladelphia’s signature Pearl Street Passage event from October 8th to 11th, visitors to The Trestle Inn helped transform a grey slice of sidewalk on Callowhill Street into a green oasis by repurposing their empty beer cans into hydroponic planters.

I-SITE was asked to design the WE CAN brand, a poster and promos for the bar, and the microsite.  It was agreed the brand should be inspiring and illustrative, so the team came up with a beer can featuring the WE CAN logo and the name of this year’s project. The WE CAN beer can is the focal point all the online and offline media.

The one page scolling website was developed in WordPress and features Instagram and Twitter integration to encourage the public to follow the project and get involved by sharing their own ideas for aluminum can upcycling.

I-SITE launches Re-PLACE-ing Philadelphia website

I-SITE recently partnered on an innovative community arts and culture project that is making visible the “unspoken” and seemingly invisible archives of cultural memory in Philadelphia’s rich and diverse past. Funded by Pew Charitable Trusts and conceived and managed by The Painted Bride Arts Center, Re-PLACE-ing Philadelphia features artists/thinkers Reggie Wilson, Faustin Linyekula, and Marty Pottenger who are weaving critical dialogue and conversations within and around their work, and recording and archiving the experiences. King Britt, Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Brenda Dixon Gottschild will be acting as advisors [aka Free Radicals] and assisting the artists/thinkers in exploring Philadelphia and developing ideas and projects.

For the online program Painted Bride challenged I-SITE to find innovative ways to report on the artists’ work and also encourage communities and the public to use their smartphones and tablets to share their stories and insights while on the move.

All the site content, whether a bio, video or photograph, is in the form of a field note that is displayed on the home page and can be submitted by the public as well as the artists/thinkers, Free Radicals and Painted Bride team.  These field notes can be filtered by tags, author keyword and time period therefore creating a rich and interactive archive that will remain online as a resource after the 18-month project is completed.

The website built on Drupal 7, is fully responsive and uses Isotope and Masonry libraries to sort and filter interactively with the varying media formats and content published on the site. With the project launched, the I-SITE team is now supporting the website and collaborating with Painted Bride on ways to use social media to publicize the project and generate content.

It’s Game On! in Lower Manhattan

I-SITE teamed up again with New York’s Downtown Alliance to develop a microsite promoting GameOn!, a series of block parties running throughout the summer on Lower Manhattan’s Water Street between Wall Street and Old Slip.

Game On-screen_desktop_sm

The microsite features a number of events in categories that include music, drink, food, games and film. The website is fully responsive and features an interactive map of the participating Lower Manhattan locations. Although the Game On! events are free to attend and do not require a ticket, the team integrated an Eventbrite RSVP for ‘players’ to join the game.

I-SITE built the microsite on the Drupal 7 content management platform providing the Downtown Alliance with easy access for managing the content throughout the summer.

I-SITE launches cat office fostering program

Here at I-SITE, we’re used to seeing mice scattered across our desks. But now we have feline friends walking on our desktops, too!

The brainchild of Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society Board Member Josette Bonafino, this new program named KATO, or Kitty at the Office, provides shelter kitties with temporary foster care while they await their forever homes. I-SITE is the first, we hope, of many offices in the Philadelphia area that will help cats that are currently stressed in PAWS’s shelters and in need of help.

kato_instagram

The I-SITE team loves all animals, and we loved our first KATO foster Kali so much that she was hired her full-time. Find out what Kali thinks of the I-SITE team, the office and her new foster pal Janga in this no mouse-holes barred exposé.

And of course we also designed and developed a website for all you interested execs and employees to find out more about the program and how you can sign up. So if you’re a whisker away from fostering, check out the website today. Kali is purrsitively glowing with pride as the website recently was honored with a Bronze in the Advocacy/Non-Profit Category at the 2015 Horizon Interactive Awards.

Finally feel free to contact us. We’re ready for you to litter our inbox and will be more than happy to share all the amazing benefits of having a furry mate or two to work and play with every day of the week!

Kali Exposed

Nickname:

Kalita or Gargoyle

Skills:

I’m a devil with a mouse. I’m also great at striking a variety of poses that contribute absolutely nothing to our projects but make my team mates laugh.

Tools of the trade:

I’m old school and new technologies don’t bowl me over. I do turn to furballz.net if i think that I am going to choke on a project.

How did you land a plumb position at I-SITE?

I clawed my way in and definitely believe that purrsistence pays.

How is it working with new male team member Janga?

I’m usually adamant about not criticizing my workmates but it was difficult when fellow foster Janga joined the team to work on our new KATO project. I’m disciplined, well-organized and care about our clients and work. Janga is into disruptive technologies that include sneak attacks and hair biting.

Friskies or Fugu?

Back in the shelter at the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society [PAWS] they really took good care of me. But now I’m a full time project manager at I-SITE I have to admit I’ve developed a taste for the finer things in life including Blue Fin Tuna, Fugu and the Kitten with a Whip cocktail at The Trestle Inn.

Favorite Website?

I love turning to Gargoyles in Europe for vogueing inspiration. But my absolute favorite website is for our new office fostering program KATO, because its helping my friends and features my work mate Janga.

What makes the purrfect client?

The purrfect client is one who strokes my ego occasionally. I don’t like the ones who tail off at the end of a project.

Next Philadelphia Mayor?

I was hoping Sam Katz would run again, but as long as the new mayor has animal welfare high on the agenda I will be happy. There are plenty of my relatives and friends out there who need help and homes.

Dream project:

I would love to work on more projects with my dear friends the great apes. They used to bamboozle me but now I’m really enjoying monkeying around with my team mates here at I-SITE on the apeAPP project.

Future prediction:

PAWS will achieve their goal of Philadelphia being a no-kill city!
